Michael Laucke, born on January twenty-ninth, nineteen forty-seven, is a distinguished Canadian guitarist, entrepreneur, and music educator. His journey into the world of music began at the tender age of thirteen, where he showcased his talent through professional snooker demonstrations. The winnings from these events enabled him to travel from Montreal to New York City, where he studied classical guitar under the guidance of Rolando Valdés-Blain.
With a career that spans over three decades, Laucke made his performance debut in nineteen sixty-five and recorded his first of sixteen albums in nineteen sixty-nine. His artistic endeavors took him across twenty-five countries, and in nineteen seventy-one, he graced the stage of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The following year marked his first concert in New York, where he had the opportunity to meet Senator Claiborne Pell.
In the early seventies, Laucke was introduced to intricate flamenco techniques by the renowned Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucía, with whom he shared a loft and performed for the elite in New York City. His talent caught the attention of Andrés Segovia, who selected him to perform for the PBS network at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in nineteen eighty-two. Laucke became Segovia's pupil and also studied with other notable classical guitarists, including Julian Bream and Alirio Díaz.
Primarily performing on classical guitar until nineteen ninety, Laucke transitioned to focus exclusively on flamenco and new flamenco works until his final performance in two thousand fifteen. He significantly enriched the guitar repertoire by creating over one hundred transcriptions of classical and flamenco music, and several prominent Canadian composers have crafted atonal works specifically for him. Recognized as one of Canada's best-known soloists by SOCAN's The Music Scene magazine, Laucke has been lauded by music critic Eric McLean of the Montreal Gazette as a pivotal figure in advancing the guitar's prominence in Canada.
Throughout his illustrious career, Laucke has received numerous awards and honors, including the Grand Prix du Disque-Canada for Best Canadian Recording. His contributions to the music industry extend beyond performance, as he has also made a mark as a businessman in the field.
