Michael Nell, born on February fifth, nineteen eighty-four, in Calgary, Alberta, is a distinguished former ski jumper and engineer. He embarked on his ski jumping journey at the age of almost fifteen, a late start compared to many of his peers who typically begin around five or six. Despite this, his talent shone through quickly, earning him a spot on the National development team within just two years.
By the age of sixteen, Nell had advanced to the Canadian National Team, where he competed for three years. His dedication to academics led him to take a year off from the sport, but he returned to the National team for an additional two years from two thousand four to two thousand six. This return was motivated by the exciting news that Canada would be sending its first Olympic Ski Jumping team since nineteen ninety-two to the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Although Nell did not compete in the World Cup or World Championships, he achieved notable success in the Continental Cup, finishing sixth in the normal hill competition in Calgary in September two thousand two. He also showcased his skills at the Junior World Championships in Schonach, Germany, that same year. However, his late entry into the sport meant he was among the least experienced competitors, and at seventeen, he faced his final opportunity to compete at the Junior World Championships.
Michael concluded his competitive ski jumping career after participating in all three events at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he placed sixty-fourth and sixty-fifth in the qualifying rounds of the normal and large hill individual events, respectively. He was also part of the Canadian team that finished fifteenth in the team event.
After retiring from ski jumping, Nell returned to academia, pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. He graduated in two thousand eleven and is currently working towards obtaining his Professional Engineering designation.
