Michele Scarponi

Michele Scarponi, born on September twenty-fifth, nineteen seventy-nine, was a prominent Italian road bicycle racer whose career spanned from two thousand two until his untimely death in two thousand seventeen. He rode for several teams, including Acqua & Sapone–Cantina Tollo, Domina Vacanze–Elitron, Würth, Acqua & Sapone–Caffè Mokambo, Androni Giocattoli, Lampre–Merida, and Astana. Throughout his career, Scarponi achieved an impressive total of twenty-one professional victories.

Scarponi's passion for cycling ignited at the tender age of eight when he joined a local team in the Marche region. His dedication paid off as he clinched the junior Italian National Road Race Championships in nineteen ninety-seven. After spending four years at the amateur level with Zalf–Euromobil–Fior and Site–Frezza, he turned professional in two thousand two, quickly establishing himself in the competitive cycling world.

His career was marked by significant achievements, including major victories in two thousand nine with Diquigiovanni–Androni, where he won stages and the general classification in the Tirreno–Adriatico and two stages in the Giro d'Italia. Scarponi's tenure with Lampre–ISD from two thousand eleven to two thousand thirteen saw him rise to prominence, finishing second in prestigious races and ultimately being promoted to victories after Alberto Contador's disqualification.

In two thousand fourteen, Scarponi joined the Astana team, initially taking on a leadership role in the Giro d'Italia before transitioning to a domestique for fellow Italian cyclists. His final professional race in two thousand seventeen at the Tour of the Alps marked a triumphant return to form, as he secured his first individual victory in three and a half years. Despite facing challenges, including two doping-related suspensions, Scarponi's legacy in the cycling world remains significant.
