Renowned for his prowess in the ring, Cotto is celebrated as a multiple-time world champion and holds the distinction of being the first Puerto Rican boxer to secure world titles across four weight classes, ranging from light welterweight to middleweight.

Beginning his journey as a hard-hitting pressure fighter, Cotto evolved into a refined boxer-puncher as he ascended through the ranks. His amateur career was marked by significant achievements, including representing Puerto Rico in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions at prestigious events such as the nineteen ninety-nine Pan American Games and the two thousand Olympics, where he earned a silver medal at the nineteen ninety-eight Junior World Championships.

Cotto's professional debut in two thousand one led to a remarkable victory over Kelson Pinto for the WBO light welterweight title in two thousand four, followed by six successful defenses. His transition to welterweight saw him claim the vacant WBA title in two thousand six, which he defended four times before facing his first career loss to Antonio Margarito in two thousand eight.
