Mihaela Peneș, born on July 22, 1947, was a distinguished Romanian javelin thrower who left an indelible mark on the world of athletics. Competing in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games, she showcased her exceptional talent by winning a gold medal in the former and a silver medal in the latter, solidifying her status as one of the top athletes of her time.
Her journey into athletics was inspired by her mother, a former athlete, which led her to transition from swimming, handball, and basketball to the javelin throw. In 1963, Peneș made headlines by winning the national junior championships and setting a national record, paving the way for her senior career that began in 1964.
After retiring from competitive sports, Peneș dedicated herself to nurturing future generations of athletes as a coach and official. Her commitment to athletics extended beyond coaching; in 1990, she became a member of the Romanian Olympic Committee, later rising to the position of head of its international department in 1995. From January to April 1999, she served as the Secretary General of the committee.
Mihaela Peneș passed away on August 29, 2024, at the age of seventy-seven, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in athletics and a profound impact on the sports community.
