Mika Häkkinen, known as 'the Flying Finn', is a celebrated Finnish former racing driver who made his mark in Formula One from 1991 to 2001. Born on September twenty-eighth, nineteen sixty-eight, in Vantaa, Häkkinen began his journey in motorsport at the tender age of five, excelling in karting and securing numerous regional and national titles before advancing to junior formulae in nineteen eighty-seven.
Under the mentorship of Keke Rosberg, the 1982 World Drivers' Champion, Häkkinen clinched his first title in Nordic Formula Ford and triumphed in the nineteen ninety British Formula Three Championship with West Surrey Racing. His talent caught the attention of the Marlboro driver academy, leading him to sign with Lotus in nineteen ninety-one, where he made his Formula One debut at the United States Grand Prix.
After two challenging seasons, Häkkinen joined McLaren as a test driver in nineteen ninety-three, partnering with the legendary Ayrton Senna. His breakthrough came in nineteen ninety-seven when he secured his first victory at the European Grand Prix. The following years saw him engage in a fierce rivalry with Michael Schumacher, culminating in his first championship win in nineteen ninety-eight, making him the second Finnish World Drivers' Champion. He successfully defended his title in nineteen ninety-nine, finishing just two points ahead of Eddie Irvine.
Häkkinen's career in Formula One concluded in two thousand one, after achieving twenty race wins, twenty-six pole positions, twenty-five fastest laps, and fifty-one podiums. His final victory came at the United States Grand Prix. Post-retirement, he competed in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters from two thousand five to two thousand seven and transitioned into driver management while serving as a brand ambassador for Mercedes-AMG. Since two thousand twenty-two, Häkkinen has taken on the role of commentator and pundit for Viaplay.
