Mikael Agricola

Mikael Agricola, born in 1508, was a pivotal figure in the development of literary Finnish and a key advocate for the Protestant Reformation in Sweden, which included Finland during that era. Often referred to as the 'father of literary Finnish', Agricola's contributions to the Finnish language and culture are immeasurable.

In 1554, Agricola was consecrated as the bishop of Turku (Åbo) without papal approval, marking a significant moment in the history of the Finnish church, which was then part of the Church of Sweden. He dedicated himself to reforming the church along Lutheran lines, a task that would shape the religious landscape of Finland.

One of his most notable achievements was the translation of the New Testament into Finnish, a monumental task he completed in just three years. Additionally, he produced a prayer book and hymns that became integral to Finland's new Lutheran Church, establishing the orthographic rules that underpin modern Finnish spelling.

Tragically, Agricola's life was cut short when he succumbed to a sudden illness while returning from a diplomatic mission, during which he played a role in negotiating the Treaty of Novgorod with the Tsardom of Russia. His legacy endures through his profound impact on Finnish literature and the Lutheran faith.
