Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Mike Hawthorn

Mike Hawthorn, born on April 10, 1929, was a distinguished British racing driver who made his mark in the world of Formula One from 1952 to 1958. He is best remembered for his remarkable achievement in 1958 when he clinched the Formula One World Drivers' Championship with Ferrari, becoming the first British driver to do so. This victory was particularly poignant as he triumphed over the legendary Stirling Moss by a mere point.

Throughout his seven seasons in Formula One, Hawthorn showcased his exceptional talent by winning three Grands Prix. His prowess was not limited to single-seater racing; he also excelled in endurance racing, securing victories at both the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1955, driving for Jaguar.

Tragically, Hawthorn's career was cut short when he announced his retirement shortly after his championship win, a decision influenced by the devastating loss of his close friend and teammate, Peter Collins, who died in a crash during the German Grand Prix. Just three months after stepping away from the sport, Hawthorn's life was further marred by tragedy when he died in a road accident in Guildford while driving his Jaguar 3.4 Litre.

In recognition of his contributions to motorsport, the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy was established by the RAC in 1959. This award honors the most successful British or Commonwealth driver in Formula One each year, ensuring that Hawthorn's legacy continues to inspire future generations of racers.
