Mike Johanns, born on June eighteenth, nineteen fifty, in Osage, Iowa, is a distinguished American attorney and politician. He graduated from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and later earned his law degree from Creighton University School of Law. Johanns began his professional journey in private legal practice before serving as a clerk for the Nebraska Supreme Court.
His political career took off in nineteen eighty-three when he was elected to the Lancaster County Board as a Democrat, a position he held until nineteen eighty-seven. In nineteen eighty-eight, he was elected to the Lincoln City Council, and in nineteen ninety-one, he became the forty-seventh mayor of Lincoln, a role he was re-elected to in nineteen ninety-five.
Johanns transitioned to state leadership when he won the gubernatorial election in nineteen ninety-eight, defeating Democratic candidate Bill Hoppner. He was re-elected in two thousand two against insurance executive Stormy Dean. His political journey continued as he was appointed by President George W. Bush as the Secretary of Agriculture, serving from two thousand five to two thousand seven, making him the fourth Nebraskan to hold this esteemed position.
In two thousand eight, Johanns sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Chuck Hagel. He successfully won the primary and subsequently the general election against Democratic challenger Scott Kleeb, officially taking office on January third, two thousand nine. He served as a U.S. Senator from Nebraska until two thousand fifteen, announcing in February two thousand thirteen that he would not seek re-election.
