Mike Leavitt, born on February eleventh, nineteen fifty-one, is a prominent American politician and public figure known for his extensive contributions to health and environmental policy. He served as the 20th United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from two thousand five to two thousand nine and was the 10th Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from two thousand three to two thousand five. A dedicated member of the Republican Party, Leavitt also held the position of the 14th Governor of Utah from nineteen ninety-three to two thousand three.
Leavitt's career began in nineteen seventy-two, where he initially worked in the insurance and risk management industry until nineteen ninety-two. Prior to his governorship, he was the president and CEO of The Leavitt Group from nineteen eighty-four until his election as Governor. During his tenure as governor, he was instrumental in establishing Western Governors University and the first charter schools in Utah. He also played a key role in preparing the state for the two thousand two Winter Olympics and was a leader in modernizing the sales tax system for e-commerce across the United States.
In two thousand three, Leavitt resigned as governor after being nominated by President George W. Bush to lead the EPA, succeeding Olene Walker. His leadership at the EPA was marked by significant initiatives, and he was later promoted to Secretary of Health and Human Services at the beginning of Bush's second term. In this role, he oversaw the implementation of Medicare Part D, developed the National Pandemic Plan, and worked on various health care reforms, including the reauthorization of SCHIP and TANF.
