Mike Lee, born on June fourth, nineteen seventy-one, is a prominent American lawyer and politician currently serving as the senior United States senator from Utah. He has held this esteemed position since two thousand eleven, becoming Utah's senior senator in two thousand nineteen following the retirement of Orrin Hatch. In two thousand twenty-one, he also became the dean of Utah's congressional delegation after Representative Rob Bishop stepped down.
Lee's legal career began with clerking for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, followed by a clerkship for Samuel Alito on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Utah from two thousand two to two thousand five and later worked as general counsel in the office of Utah governor Jon Huntsman Jr. from two thousand five to two thousand six. After Alito's appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, Lee again had the opportunity to clerk for him.
In the two thousand ten U.S. Senate election, Lee made headlines by defeating incumbent senator Bob Bennett in the Republican primary and subsequently winning the general election. Although he initially refrained from endorsing Donald Trump during the two thousand sixteen Republican presidential primaries, Lee later became an ally of Trump, endorsing him in the two thousand twenty and two thousand twenty-four elections. He supported the Trump administration's efforts to contest the two thousand twenty presidential election, although he did not sign the Texas v. Pennsylvania amicus brief and ultimately voted to certify the election results.
Lee has successfully been reelected twice, in two thousand sixteen and two thousand twenty-two, the latter election being a rematch against Evan McMullin. Additionally, he chaired the Joint Economic Committee from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-one, further solidifying his influence in the Senate.
