Mike Parkes

Mike Parkes, born on September twenty-fourth, nineteen thirty-one, was a distinguished British racing driver and engineer. He made his mark in the world of Formula One, competing in six Grands Prix between nineteen sixty-six and nineteen sixty-seven. His racing career was highlighted by a remarkable victory at the twelve hours of Sebring in nineteen sixty-four, where he drove for Ferrari.

Originating from Richmond, Surrey, Parkes was the son of John Parkes, who held the position of chairman and managing director of the Alvis Group. His journey in motorsport began at the nineteen fifty-nine British Grand Prix, where he debuted in a Formula Two car entered by Fry. After a successful stint in sportscar racing, he returned to Formula One with Ferrari in nineteen sixty-six, achieving one pole position, two podium finishes, and accumulating a total of fourteen championship points.

In addition to his racing accomplishments, Parkes was a skilled automotive engineer. He contributed to the development of the Hillman Imp while working for the Rootes Group. Later, from nineteen seventy-four onwards, he took on the role of principal development engineer for the iconic Lancia Stratos.

Tragically, Mike Parkes' life was cut short in August nineteen seventy-seven when he died in a road traffic collision near Turin, at the age of forty-five. His legacy in the world of motorsport continues to be remembered by enthusiasts and professionals alike.
