Mikhail Pokrovsky

Mikhail Pokrovsky, born on August seventeenth, eighteen sixty-eight, emerged as a pivotal figure in the landscape of Russian history and politics. As a Marxist historian and revolutionary, he became one of the earliest professionally trained historians to engage with the Russian revolutionary movement. His contributions during the 1920s established him as the most influential Soviet historian of the era, earning him the title of 'the head of the Marxist historical school in the USSR.'

Before the October Revolution of nineteen seventeen, Pokrovsky spent nearly a decade in European exile, aligning himself with independent radical circles, notably close to the philosopher Alexander Bogdanov. Following the Bolshevik seizure of power, he rejoined the Bolshevik Party and relocated to Moscow, where he took on the role of deputy chief in the People's Commissariat of Enlightenment, the Soviet government's new department of education.

In the early days of the Soviet educational establishment, Pokrovsky played a crucial role, editing several major historical journals and overseeing the restructuring of the higher education system as the head of the Institute of Red Professors. His scholarly works provided pioneering reinterpretations of Russian history, emphasizing class struggle and the progression of history through distinct stages of development.

Pokrovsky was known for his critical stance towards the multi-national Tsarist empire, often downplaying the significance of individual figures such as Tsar Peter the Great in favor of broader historical narratives. His legacy as a historian and political figure remains influential in the study of Soviet history.
