Mikhail Prokhorov, born on May 3, 1965, is a prominent Russian-Israeli entrepreneur, investor, and politician. He is best known for his former ownership of the Brooklyn Nets and his significant influence in the metals industry. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Prokhorov acquired state-owned metals assets at remarkably low prices through Russia's controversial loans-for-shares privatization program. His company, Norilsk Nickel, emerged as the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the global commodities market.
In addition to his ventures in metals, Prokhorov served as the chairman of Polyus Gold, Russia's largest gold producer, and held the position of President of Onexim Group. His financial acumen has earned him a place among the wealthiest individuals globally, with a net worth estimated at nine billion eight hundred million dollars. As of December 1, 2021, he was ranked as the 148th richest person in the world by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Prokhorov's political aspirations came to the forefront in 2011 when he ran as an independent candidate in the 2012 Russian presidential election, securing third place with nearly eight percent of the vote. In June 2012, he founded the Civic Platform, a new political party aimed at reforming Russian politics.
In April 2022, Prokhorov made a significant life change by immigrating to Israel, where he received citizenship under the Law of Return. This move marked a new chapter in his life, reflecting his diverse background and multifaceted career.
