Mikheil Saakashvili, born on December twenty-first, nineteen sixty-seven, is a prominent Georgian-Ukrainian politician and jurist. He served as the third president of Georgia from January two thousand four to November two thousand thirteen, with a brief hiatus from November two thousand seven to January two thousand eight due to anti-government protests. As the founder and former chairman of the United National Movement party, Saakashvili played a pivotal role in Georgian politics, particularly during the Rose Revolution, which led to the ousting of President Eduard Shevardnadze.
Saakashvili's political career began in nineteen ninety-five when he was elected to Parliament and appointed Minister of Justice. His leadership during the mass protests against the rigged two thousand three parliamentary elections solidified his status as a key opposition figure. Following his election as president, he implemented extensive reforms aimed at combating corruption, including the complete overhaul of the police force and significant economic policies that reduced taxes and streamlined government operations.
Despite notable achievements, such as a seventy percent increase in GDP and a tripling of per-capita income during his presidency, Saakashvili's tenure was marred by controversies, including allegations of police brutality and systemic abuses within the prison system. After his party's defeat in the two thousand twelve parliamentary elections, he faced criminal charges in Georgia, leading to his departure from the country in late two thousand thirteen.
In subsequent years, Saakashvili experienced a tumultuous political journey, including the loss of his Ukrainian citizenship in two thousand seventeen and his eventual return to Ukraine in two thousand nineteen. Appointed to lead Ukraine's National Reform Council in May two thousand twenty, he continued to influence politics from abroad. In October two thousand twenty-one, he announced his return to Georgia, only to be arrested upon arrival, marking the beginning of his six-year prison sentence imposed in absentia.
Since May two thousand twenty-two, Saakashvili has been receiving treatment in a civilian clinic in Tbilisi, as he navigates the complexities of his legal and political challenges.
