Milan Panić, born on December twentieth, nineteen twenty-nine, is a distinguished Serbian businessman, humanitarian, and former politician. He notably served as the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from nineteen ninety-two to nineteen ninety-three, during which he became a prominent advocate for peace and democracy in the Balkan region. His political journey included a bid for the presidency of Serbia in nineteen ninety-two, where he finished second to Slobodan Milošević amidst allegations of media manipulation and vote tampering.
As a unique figure in political history, Panić became the first American citizen to hold a high-level political position in a foreign country since Golda Meir. His tenure as Prime Minister raised questions regarding the legality of retaining U.S. citizenship while serving in such an office, given the constitutional restrictions against U.S. citizens accepting foreign governmental roles. Additionally, he made history as the first civilian to serve as Defence Minister in Serbia.
Beyond his political endeavors, Panić has had a remarkable career in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. He transformed ICN Pharmaceuticals from a modest operation in his garage into a global powerhouse, achieving over six hundred seventy-two million dollars in annual sales across ninety countries at its peak. After retiring from ICN, he established MP Biomedicals, a global leader in life science and diagnostic products, with operations spanning North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. In October two thousand fifteen, he announced the impending sale of MP Biomedicals to Valiant Fine Chemicals Co., Ltd., a Chinese chemical company.
Panić is also deeply committed to philanthropy, actively engaging through his Milan Panić Jr. Foundation and MP Global Enterprises & Associates, LLC. His philanthropic efforts include sponsoring scholarships at the MIT-Harvard Medical School Program and lecturing on peacebuilding at prestigious institutions such as George Washington University and the University of Southern California. He holds a position on the President's cabinet at Chapman University, serves as Vice Chairman and sponsor of the Los Angeles Opera, and frequently supports various cultural institutions and charities across California.
