Millicent Fawcett

Millicent Fawcett, born on June eleventh, eighteen forty-seven, was a prominent English political activist and writer who dedicated her life to the cause of women's suffrage. Her unwavering commitment to legal reform for women's rights was evident as she led the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) from eighteen ninety-seven to nineteen nineteen, making it the largest women's rights organization in Britain. Fawcett famously stated, 'I cannot say I became a suffragist. I always was one, from the time I was old enough to think at all about the principles of Representative Government.'

In addition to her suffrage work, Fawcett was a strong advocate for women's education. She served as a governor of Bedford College, London, which is now known as Royal Holloway, and played a pivotal role in co-founding Newnham College, Cambridge in eighteen seventy-one. Her efforts were instrumental in broadening educational opportunities for women, paving the way for future generations.

Fawcett's legacy was further cemented when, in two thousand eighteen, she became the first woman to be honored with a statue in Parliament Square, a century after the Representation of the People Act. This recognition reflects her significant contributions to the fight for women's rights and her enduring impact on British society.
