Million Wolde

Million Wolde, born on March 17, 1979, is a distinguished Ethiopian long-distance runner renowned for his remarkable achievements in athletics. His journey began at the tender age of seventeen when he competed in the 1996 World Junior Championships in Sydney, where he finished sixth in the 3000 m steeplechase. Two years later, at the World Junior Championships in Annecy, France, he clinched victory in the 5000 m, marking the start of his ascent in the world of competitive running.

Wolde's early career was highlighted by his participation in the Junior World Cross-Country Championships, where he secured second place in Turin in 1997 and triumphed in Marrakesh in 1998 over 8 km. He also represented Ethiopia in the 1998 World Road Relay Championships in Manaus, Brazil, where the team finished second to Kenya, showcasing his potential on the international stage.

The pinnacle of Wolde's career came during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, where he won the gold medal in the 5000 m with a time of 13:35.49. This victory was a testament to his strategic racing, as he surged past his competitors with just 200 m to go. Following this triumph, he earned a silver medal in the 5000 m at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, further solidifying his status as a top athlete.

Despite facing injuries in the latter part of his career, Wolde remained active in the sport. By 2008, he was still competing, and as of 2015, he resided in Tarrytown, NY, participating in local races. His passion for athletics continued as he took on the role of Assistant Cross Country coach at Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, MN, in August 2018, inspiring the next generation of runners.
