Minna Keene, born on April fifth, eighteen sixty-one, in Rumbeck, Waldeck, Germany, was a pioneering photographer who made her mark in Canada. A self-taught artist, she became renowned for her pictorial portrait photography, earning a reputation as a hugely successful figure in the field.
Throughout her life, Keene lived in various countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Canada. In eighteen eighty-seven, she married Caleb Keene, and together they settled in Oakville, Ontario, where she continued to develop her craft until her passing in nineteen forty-three.
As an early female member of the Linked Ring, a prestigious photographic society, Keene played a significant role in advocating for photography as a legitimate art form. Her contributions extended to the London Salon of Photography, and she made history as the first woman to be admitted as a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, showcasing her work in annual exhibitions from nineteen eleven to nineteen twenty-nine.
