Pjanić began his professional journey at Metz, where he played for a single season before making a significant move to Lyon in 2008. His career took a notable turn in 2011 when he joined AS Roma, where he solidified his reputation as one of Serie A's elite midfielders. In 2016, he transferred to Juventus, becoming a key player in the squad and contributing to the team's success with four league titles and two Coppa Italia victories. His performances earned him a place in the Serie A Team of the Year for multiple seasons and recognition in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season during Juventus's run to the final in 2017.

In September 2020, Pjanić signed with FC Barcelona, and he later spent a year on loan at Beşiktaş. His career continued in the UAE Pro League with Sharjah in 2022, followed by a move to CSKA Moscow in the Russian Premier League in 2024. After his tenure with CSKA Moscow, he announced his retirement from professional football in 2025.
