Mircea Geoană, born on July fourteenth, nineteen fifty-eight, is a prominent Romanian politician and diplomat. He held the esteemed position of deputy secretary general of NATO from July 2019 until September 2024, where he played a crucial role during a tumultuous period marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His leadership was characterized by his collaboration with Jens Stoltenberg and his chairmanship of NATO's Innovation Committee.
Before his tenure at NATO, Geoană made significant contributions to Romanian politics. He served as the president of the Senate of Romania from December two thousand eight until his revocation in November two thousand eleven. His political journey also included a notable stint as the head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) from April two thousand five to February two thousand ten, during which he was the party's candidate for the presidency in the two thousand nine election, narrowly losing to Traian Băsescu.
Geoană's political career has seen its share of challenges, including his dismissal from the PSD on November twenty-second, two thousand eleven, although he rejoined the party in late two thousand twelve. He also founded and led the Romanian Social Party from two thousand fifteen to two thousand eighteen. In addition to his political endeavors, he served as the president of Aspen Institute Romania, an apolitical and non-profit organization dedicated to fostering leadership and dialogue.
In September two thousand twenty-four, Geoană resigned from his NATO position to pursue a presidential run in Romania, where he ultimately finished in sixth place. His diverse experiences and leadership roles have made him a significant figure in both Romanian and international politics.
