Mirian III

Mirian III, a prominent king of Iberia, also known as Kartli in modern-day Georgia, reigned during a pivotal era that coincided with the rule of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. His legacy is deeply intertwined with the establishment of the Chosroid dynasty, which he founded, marking a significant chapter in the region's history.

Notably, Mirian is celebrated as the first Christian king of Iberia, a transformation attributed to the influential missionary Nino from Cappadocia. Under his reign, Christianity was not only embraced but also declared the state religion, a monumental shift that shaped the cultural and spiritual landscape of the kingdom.

His reign, traditionally chronicled to span seventy-seven years, is estimated to have occurred between the years two hundred sixty-eight and three hundred forty-five, although some scholars suggest a revised timeline from two hundred eighty-four to three hundred sixty-one. This extensive period allowed him to solidify his influence and the Christian faith within his realm.

Mirian III's impact extended beyond his lifetime, as he is venerated by the Georgian Orthodox Church, recognized as a saint, and honored with the title of Saint Equal to the Apostles King Mirian.
