Mirjam Pressler

Mirjam Pressler, born on June eighteenth, nineteen forty, was a distinguished German novelist and translator, renowned for her contributions to children's and teenage literature. With a prolific output of over thirty books aimed at young readers, she captivated audiences with her engaging storytelling and imaginative narratives.

In addition to her writing, Pressler made significant contributions to the literary world as a translator, rendering more than three hundred works from Hebrew, English, Dutch, and Afrikaans into German. Notably, she translated a revised edition of Anne Frank's diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, in nineteen ninety-one, a pivotal work that renewed its copyright and brought renewed attention to this important historical text.

Raised in a foster home by a Jewish mother, Pressler's early life experiences shaped her perspective and fueled her passion for literature. She pursued her education in painting at Städelschule in Frankfurt and later studied English and French literary studies at LMU Munich. Before embarking on her writing career, she spent eight years as a jeans shop retailer, all while raising three daughters as a single mother.

Her dedication to literature and her community led her to become a member of the PEN Centre Germany, where she continued to advocate for writers and the importance of literary expression.
