Mirjana Marković

Mirjana Marković, born on July tenth, nineteen forty-two, was a prominent Serbian journalist and politician. She was notably the wife of Slobodan Milošević, the former president of Yugoslavia and Serbia. Marković played a significant role in the political landscape of the region, leading the far-left Yugoslav United Left (JUL), which formed a coalition with Milošević's Socialist Party of Serbia following the Bosnian War.

Her influence over her husband was substantial, leading many to view her as the power behind the throne. This perception earned her nicknames such as 'The Red Witch' and 'the Lady Macbeth of Belgrade' among her adversaries. Marković's political career was marked by controversy, including accusations of abuse of office related to the allocation of a state-owned apartment for her grandson’s nanny in September two thousand.

In December two thousand two, she was indicted for her alleged misconduct and subsequently fled Belgrade on February twenty-third, two thousand three. After living in political asylum in Moscow, Russia, she faced a court ruling in June two thousand eighteen, where she was found guilty in absentia and sentenced to one year in prison. However, this verdict was overturned on appeal in March two thousand nineteen.

Marković's life came to an end in two thousand nineteen while she was still residing in Moscow, leaving behind a complex legacy intertwined with the tumultuous history of the Balkans during her lifetime.
