Missak Manouchian

Missak Manouchian, born on September first, nineteen oh six, was a remarkable Armenian poet and a fervent communist activist. His early life was marked by tragedy as he survived the Armenian genocide of nineteen fifteen to nineteen sixteen. In nineteen twenty-five, he relocated to France from an orphanage in Lebanon, where he quickly became immersed in the vibrant Armenian literary circles that thrived within the communist movement.

During the tumultuous years of World War II, Manouchian emerged as a key figure in the French Resistance. He served as the military commissioner of the FTP-MOI, a group composed primarily of European immigrants, including a significant number of Jews. This courageous band of resistance fighters was known for their daring operations, which included assassinations and bombings targeting Nazi forces in the Paris Region. Notably, the Manouchian group was recognized as one of the most active factions within the French Resistance.

In November nineteen forty-three, Manouchian and many of his comrades were captured by the Nazis. Their bravery and commitment to the cause ultimately led to their execution at Fort Mont-Valérien on February twenty-first, nineteen forty-four. Today, Missak Manouchian is celebrated as a hero of the French Resistance, and his legacy is honored with a place of rest in the Panthéon in Paris.
