Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland, born on September 10, 1982, is a trailblazing American ballet dancer and author, renowned for her remarkable journey in the world of classical ballet. She has primarily danced for the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the leading ballet companies in the United States. On June 30, 2015, she made history by becoming the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT's 75-year history, a milestone that has inspired countless aspiring dancers.

Despite not beginning her ballet training until the age of 13, Copeland quickly showcased her prodigious talent. By 1998, her ballet teachers had taken on the roles of her custodial and legal guardians amidst a tumultuous custody battle involving her mother. During this challenging time, Copeland was already receiving professional offers, leading to a complex legal situation that included filings for emancipation and restraining orders. Ultimately, she moved back home to study under a new teacher, a former ABT member, which set the stage for her future success.

In 1997, she was honored with the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award as the best dancer in Southern California. After participating in two summer workshops with ABT, she joined the company's Studio Company in 2000, progressed to the corps de ballet in 2001, and became an ABT soloist in 2007.
