Misty Hyman

Misty Hyman, born on March 23, 1979, is a celebrated American swimmer known for her remarkable achievements in competitive swimming. She gained international fame as an Olympic gold medalist and a former world record-holder, particularly in the women's 200-meter butterfly event.

Hyman's journey to Olympic glory was not without its challenges. In March 1996, she narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team for the Atlanta Games, finishing third and fourth in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events at the U.S. Olympic Trials. However, her determination and talent shone through as she represented the U.S. Finswimming Team at the 8th World Championship in Hungary later that year.

The pinnacle of Hyman's career came during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. On September 20, 2000, she stunned the world by winning the gold medal in the women's 200-meter butterfly, a race in which she was not the favorite. Australian swimmer Susie O'Neill, who had been undefeated in this event for six years, was expected to take the title. Hyman's victory was a testament to her skill, particularly her expert use of the challenging fish kick on turns, which played a crucial role in her success.

In addition to her Olympic triumph, Hyman's performance in 2000 saw her ranked thirty-fifth in the world in the 50-meter butterfly, twelfth in the 100-meter butterfly, and second in the 200-meter butterfly, solidifying her status as one of the top swimmers of her time.
