Mitsuki Laycock, known professionally as Mitski, was born on September 27, 1990. An American singer-songwriter, she began her musical journey while studying composition at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music. During this time, she self-released her debut albums, Lush in 2012 and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business in 2013, showcasing her unique sound and lyrical depth.

In 2014, Mitski released her third studio album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek, under the label Double Double Whammy. Her career took a significant turn when she signed with Dead Oceans in 2015, leading to the release of critically acclaimed albums such as Puberty 2 in 2016, Be the Cowboy in 2018, and Laurel Hell in 2022.
