Mkhitar Sebastatsi

Mkhitar Sebastatsi, born on February seventh, sixteen seventy-six, was a prominent Armenian Catholic monk and a distinguished scholar whose contributions to theology and culture have left a lasting legacy. He is best known for founding the Mekhitarist Order, which has been a significant center of Armenian culture and education since its establishment on San Lazzaro Island near Venice in seventeen seventeen.

Recognized for his intellectual prowess, Mkhitar was often compared to the revered Armenian scholar Mesrop Mashtots by his contemporaries, including the historian Stepanos Nazarian, who referred to him as the 'second Mesrop Mashtots.' This accolade highlights the profound impact he had on the Armenian community and the broader Christian intellectual tradition.

Throughout his life, Mkhitar dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge and the promotion of Armenian culture, intertwining his scholarly work with his spiritual mission as a Christian minister.
