Mohammad Rasoulof

Mohammad Rasoulof, born on November 16, 1972, is an acclaimed Iranian independent filmmaker who currently resides in exile in Europe. His body of work includes several award-winning films that have garnered international recognition, such as The Twilight (2002), Iron Island (2005), Goodbye (2011), Manuscripts Don't Burn (2013), A Man of Integrity (2017), and There Is No Evil (2020). The latter earned him the prestigious Golden Bear at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival, solidifying his status as a significant voice in contemporary cinema.

Rasoulof's films often explore themes that challenge the status quo, leading to multiple arrests and the confiscation of his passport by the Iranian government. His artistic expression has placed him at odds with authorities, reflecting the struggles faced by many artists in oppressive regimes. In May 2024, following the selection of his film The Seed of the Sacred Fig for the main competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, he was sentenced to eight years in prison, whipping, and a fine by the Islamic Republic.
