Mohammad Zahir Shah

Mohammad Zahir Shah, born on October fifteenth, nineteen fourteen, was the last king of Afghanistan, reigning from November eighth, nineteen thirty-three until his deposition on July seventeenth, nineteen seventy-three. His nearly forty-year rule marked him as the longest-serving monarch since the establishment of the Durrani Empire in the eighteenth century.

During his reign, Zahir Shah significantly expanded Afghanistan's diplomatic relations, engaging with both sides of the Cold War. In the nineteen fifties, he initiated a modernization campaign that led to the creation of a new constitution and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, fostering a period of relative peace and stability in the nation.

However, this tranquility was disrupted in nineteen seventy-three when Zahir Shah was in Italy for medical treatment. His cousin and former prime minister, Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan, orchestrated a coup d'état that resulted in the end of over two hundred twenty-five years of continuous monarchical governance, replacing it with a single-party republic.

Following his ousting, Zahir Shah lived in exile near Rome until two thousand two, when he returned to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban regime. He was honored with the title of Father of the Nation, a recognition he held until his passing in two thousand seven.
