Mohammed VI of Morocco

Mohammed VI, born on August 21, 1963, is the King of Morocco and a prominent member of the Alawi dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 1999 following the death of his father, King Hassan II. From a young age, Mohammed was involved in public engagements, preparing him for his future role as monarch.

Upon taking the throne, Mohammed VI initiated a series of reforms aimed at modernizing Morocco. Notably, he amended the family code to enhance women's rights, reflecting a commitment to social progress. In response to the 2011 protests linked to the Arab Spring, he introduced a new constitution, which was approved by public referendum on July 1, 2011, further demonstrating his willingness to adapt to the demands of his people.

His reign has also been marked by significant economic and military modernization efforts, as well as the promotion of non-sectarian Islam and Berber culture. He designated Standard Moroccan Amazigh as an official language alongside Standard Arabic and established Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, as a national holiday, thereby fostering cultural inclusivity.

In the realm of foreign policy, Mohammed VI has continued the moderate approach of his father, strengthening Morocco's ties with global powers such as the United States, the European Union, and China. He has also prioritized relations with African nations and sought international recognition for Morocco's claims over Western Sahara. Under his leadership, Morocco became the sixth Arab League country to normalize relations with Israel as part of the Abraham Accords.

In addition to his royal duties, Mohammed VI is a successful entrepreneur with extensive business interests across various sectors in Morocco. Forbes estimated his net worth to exceed five billion dollars in 2015. However, his reign has not been without controversy, as leaked diplomatic cables from WikiLeaks in 2010 raised allegations of corruption involving him and his close advisors.
