His journey in the film industry began at the young age of eighteen with the Malayalam film Thiranottam, although its release was delayed for twenty-five years due to censorship issues. Mohanlal's official screen debut came in the nineteen eighty romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he portrayed the antagonist.
