Mokgweetsi Masisi, born on July twenty-first, nineteen sixty-two, is a prominent Motswana politician who made history as the fifth president of Botswana, serving from 2018 to 2024. His political journey began as a Member of Parliament for the Moshupa-Manyana constituency, a role he held from two thousand nine until two thousand eighteen. Masisi's ascent to the vice presidency came on November twelfth, two thousand fourteen, when he was appointed by former President Ian Khama, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in his political career.
Initially, Masisi enjoyed a strong rapport with Khama; however, their relationship soured over contentious issues, notably a ban on elephant hunting. This rift led to accusations from Khama, who claimed that Masisi had suppressed dissent during his presidency. Despite these challenges, Masisi's leadership was put to the test during the 2019 elections, where allegations of electoral fraud emerged from the opposition. Nevertheless, an observation mission from the African Union affirmed that the elections were conducted transparently and adhered to international standards.
During his presidency, Masisi's government faced the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. From March two thousand twenty to September two thousand twenty-one, he ruled by decree, a decision that sparked protests from both the public and opposition parties. His administration's response to the pandemic was a defining aspect of his tenure, showcasing the complexities of governance during a global crisis.
