Momčilo Krajišnik, born on January twentieth, nineteen forty-five, was a prominent Bosnian Serb political figure known for his significant role in the tumultuous period surrounding the Bosnian War. He co-founded the Serb Democratic Party (SDS) alongside Radovan Karadžić, establishing himself as a key player in the nationalist movement.
From nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety-two, Krajišnik served as the speaker of the People's Assembly of Republika Srpska, a position that underscored his influence during a critical time in the region's history. He further extended his political reach by becoming a member of the expanded Presidency of Republika Srpska from June to December nineteen ninety-two.
Following the Bosnian War, Krajišnik was elected as the Serb member of the tripartite Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the September nineteen ninety-six elections, holding office from October nineteen ninety-six until October nineteen ninety-eight. However, he faced defeat in his re-election bid against Živko Radišić in nineteen ninety-eight.
In two thousand six, Krajišnik was convicted of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and sentenced to twenty years in prison. He was granted early release on September first, two thousand thirteen, and returned to his homeland of Republika Srpska. Tragically, he passed away on September fifteenth, two thousand twenty, in Banja Luka due to complications from COVID-19.
