Morgana King

Maria Grazia Morgana Messina, known professionally as Morgana King, was born on June 4, 1930, and became a celebrated figure in the realms of jazz music and film. Her journey into the world of music began at the tender age of sixteen, showcasing her extraordinary talent early on. By her twenties, she was captivating audiences at a Greenwich Village nightclub, where her unique phrasing and remarkable four-octave contralto range set her apart from her contemporaries.

King's musical career flourished as she signed with a record label and began to release a series of solo albums, ultimately recording dozens throughout her career, which extended well into the late 1990s. Her contributions to jazz music were significant, and her voice resonated with fans around the world.

In addition to her musical achievements, Morgana King made a notable impact in the film industry. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Mama Corleone in the iconic films The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). Her filmography includes three additional films, with her final performance in A Brooklyn State of Mind in 1997.

Throughout her life, King was married twice to fellow jazz musicians, first to Tony Fruscella and later to Willie Dennis. She passed away on March 22, 2018, in Palm Springs, California, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and fans alike.
