Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji

Ikhtiyār al-Dīn Muḥammad Bin Bakhtiyār Khaljī, commonly known as Bakhtiyar Khalji, was a prominent Turko-Afghan military general under the Ghurid ruler Muhammad of Ghor. Born in the year one thousand one, he played a pivotal role in the Muslim conquests of eastern India, particularly in the regions of Bengal and parts of Bihar. His military campaigns marked the beginning of Muslim rule in Bengal, a significant historical shift that laid the groundwork for the Bengal Sultanate and later Mughal Bengal.

Between the years A.D. one thousand one hundred ninety-seven and one thousand two hundred six, Khalji's invasions led to widespread devastation, including the mass flight and tragic massacres of monks. His actions severely impacted the traditional Buddhist institutions, particularly the renowned Nalanda University, which was a leading center for Mahayana Buddhism. The brutal sacking of the Nalanda monastery at the end of the twelfth century symbolized the displacement of Buddhism in the region.

In addition to his military exploits, Bakhtiyar Khalji is remembered for his brief rule as the deputy-ruler of Bengal from the year one thousand two hundred three until one thousand two hundred twenty-seven. His reign, although short-lived, was marked by significant changes in the socio-political landscape of Bengal. However, his ambitions extended beyond Bengal, as he launched an ill-fated campaign into Tibet in one thousand two hundred six, which ultimately led to his assassination upon his return to Bengal.

Bakhtiyar Khalji's legacy is complex, characterized by both military prowess and the profound cultural shifts that followed his conquests. He was succeeded by Muhammad Shiran Khalji, who continued the Khalji dynasty's influence in the region.
