Muhammad Yunus

Muhammad Yunus, born on June twenty-eighth, nineteen forty, in Hathazari, Chittagong, is a distinguished Bangladeshi economist and statesman renowned for his groundbreaking work in microcredit and microfinance. He is the founder of Grameen Bank, which has transformed the lives of millions by providing financial services to the impoverished. His innovative approach to poverty alleviation began in the late nineteen seventies, following the devastating famine of nineteen seventy-four, and culminated in the establishment of Grameen Bank in nineteen eighty-three.

Yunus's contributions to the field of economics earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in two thousand six, making him the first Bangladeshi to receive this prestigious award. His work has inspired similar microfinance initiatives in approximately one hundred developing countries and even in developed nations, including the United States. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he has received numerous accolades, such as the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in two thousand nine and the Congressional Gold Medal in two thousand ten.

In two thousand twelve, Yunus was appointed Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, a role he held until two thousand eighteen. He previously served as a professor of economics at Chittagong University and has authored several influential books on finance. As a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, he continues to support microcredit initiatives. His commitment to social causes extended to his role on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation from nineteen ninety-eight to twenty twenty-one.

Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, Yunus was appointed as the fifth chief adviser of Bangladesh, leading an interim government from twenty twenty-four to twenty twenty-six. His administration focused on constitutional reforms and the upcoming general election. Recognized for his influence, he was listed among The 500 Most Influential Muslims in twenty twenty-four and named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in twenty twenty-five.
