Mustafa Akıncı

Mustafa Akıncı, born on December twenty-eighth, nineteen forty-seven, is a prominent Turkish Cypriot politician and architect. He served as the president of Northern Cyprus from April two thousand fifteen until October two thousand twenty. His political journey began at a young age when he became the first elected mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality in nineteen seventy-six, defeating a candidate backed by President Rauf Denktaş at just twenty-eight years old.

During his fourteen-year tenure as mayor, which lasted until nineteen ninety, Akıncı led numerous urban development projects that garnered international recognition, including the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. His collaborative efforts with his Greek Cypriot counterpart further solidified his reputation as a unifying figure in the region.

Akıncı's political career continued to flourish as he rose through the ranks of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP), eventually becoming its leader in nineteen eighty-seven. He served as a member of the Assembly of the Republic from nineteen ninety-three to two thousand nine and held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one. After stepping down from the TKP leadership in two thousand one, he founded the Peace and Democracy Movement in two thousand three, advocating for the reunification of Cyprus.

Throughout his career, Akıncı has been a vocal opponent of Turkey's growing influence in Northern Cyprus, a stance that has led to significant opposition from the Turkish government. In the two thousand twenty presidential election, he faced off against Ersin Tatar, a candidate supported by Ankara, and despite receiving forty-eight percent of the vote in the run-off, he was unable to secure re-election.
