Mustafa Cerić

Mustafa Cerić, born on February 5, 1952, is a prominent Bosnian cleric who made significant contributions to the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He served as the Grand Mufti from 1993 to 2012, a period marked by the challenges of post-war reconstruction and the need for spiritual leadership.

In addition to his religious duties, Cerić has been an influential political figure, advocating for the rights and identity of the Bosniak people. He currently holds the position of president of the World Bosniak Congress, where he continues to promote the interests of Bosniaks on a global scale.

In the 2014 general election, Cerić sought a seat in the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a Bosniak member, although he was not elected. His political aspirations reflect his commitment to ensuring that Islam remains a vital component of Bosniak nationalism.

Cerić has argued for the establishment of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a Bosniak nation state, emphasizing that, unlike Croats and Serbs who have their own nation states, the Bosniaks deserve similar recognition and autonomy.
