He served as the seventh Secretary General of the Arab League from July first, two thousand eleven, to July third, two thousand sixteen. His extensive career also includes significant roles within the United Nations, where he contributed to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and held the position of Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

During the pivotal moments of the 2011 Egyptian protests, Elaraby acted as a crucial liaison between the demonstrators and the government, advocating for the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak. Following the revolution, he was appointed as Egypt's Foreign Affairs Minister in Essam Sharaf's transitional government, serving from March to June of the same year.

His international experience is further highlighted by his tenure on the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one, and as a member of the International Court of Justice from two thousand one until February two thousand six. Elaraby's contributions to diplomacy and international law have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the title of Grand Officier of the Order of the Republic of Tunisia.
