Nadezhda Olizarenko, born on November 28, 1953, is a celebrated Ukrainian middle-distance runner who made her mark on the international stage while competing for the USSR. Her most notable achievement came during the 1980 Olympics, where she triumphed in the 800 m event, setting an astonishing world record of 1:53.43. This remarkable feat not only secured her a gold medal but also etched her name in the annals of athletics history.
In addition to her Olympic success, Olizarenko showcased her versatility by finishing third in the 1500 m at the same Games. Her 800 m world record stood strong until 1983 when it was surpassed by Jarmila Kratochvílová, yet it remains the second-best time ever recorded. Since then, only two athletes, Pamela Jelimo and Caster Semenya, have come within a second of her legendary mark.
Olizarenko's prowess extended beyond individual events; in 1984, she played a crucial role in setting the current world record for the 4×800 m relay. Her dominance continued in 1986 when she clinched the European 800 m title, further solidifying her status as one of the top middle-distance runners of her era. However, her journey faced challenges, as she was unable to reach the finals at the 1988 Olympics.
