Nadir Afonso

Nadir Afonso, born on December fourth, nineteen twenty, was a distinguished Portuguese painter, architect, philosopher, and graphic artist. His early career was marked by formal training in architecture, where he had the privilege of working alongside renowned figures such as Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. This foundation in architecture greatly influenced his artistic vision.

Later, Afonso pursued his passion for painting in Paris, where he emerged as a pioneer of Kinetic art. Collaborating with notable artists like Victor Vasarely, Fernand Léger, Auguste Herbin, and André Bloc, he contributed significantly to the evolution of geometric abstractionism. His innovative approach to art was not merely an act of imagination but rather a disciplined observation and manipulation of form.

Throughout his career, Nadir Afonso gained international acclaim, with many of his works housed in prestigious museums. His most celebrated series, the Cities, showcases his unique ability to depict urban landscapes from around the globe. Even into his later years, he continued to paint, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his craft.

Afonso passed away on December eleventh, two thousand thirteen, just one week after celebrating his ninety-third birthday, at a hospital in Cascais. His legacy is marked by numerous honors and a profound impact on the art world, representing Portugal at the highest levels.
