Naheed Nenshi, born on February second, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Canadian politician and journalist. He made history as the first Muslim mayor of a major Canadian city when he was elected as the thirty-sixth mayor of Calgary in two thousand ten, securing thirty-nine percent of the vote. Nenshi served three successful terms in this role, being re-elected in two thousand thirteen with an impressive seventy-four percent and again in two thousand seventeen with fifty-one percent of the vote. After his tenure, he chose not to seek re-election in the two thousand twenty-one Calgary municipal election, passing the baton to Jyoti Gondek.

Before embarking on his political career, Nenshi was well-educated, earning a degree in commerce from the University of Calgary and a Master of Public Policy from the prestigious John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. His professional background includes working as a management consultant and teaching non-profit management at the Bissett School of Business at Mount Royal University. Additionally, he contributed to the Calgary Herald with a regular column focused on municipal affairs.

In March two thousand twenty-four, Nenshi announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP). He achieved a remarkable victory on the first ballot, garnering eighty-six percent of the support with sixty-two thousand seven hundred forty-six votes. By June two thousand twenty-five, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) after winning the Edmonton-Strathcona by-election, subsequently taking on the role of leader of the Official Opposition.
