Nakano Takeko

Nakano Takeko, born in 1847, emerged as a formidable onna-musha, a female warrior of the Aizu Domain. Her legacy is etched in the annals of Japanese history, particularly during the tumultuous period of the Boshin War. Takeko's courage and determination were vividly displayed during the Battle of Aizu, where she wielded a naginata, a traditional Japanese polearm, with exceptional skill.

In a remarkable act of defiance, Takeko and her fellow female warriors took to the front lines without official sanction. The senior retainers of Aizu had initially barred women from participating in the domain's military efforts. However, this did not deter Takeko and her compatriots, who formed an ad hoc corps of female combatants, later known as the Jōshitai, or Girls' Army.
