Namdev

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Namdev

Namdev, a revered Marathi Vaishnava saint, emerged from the town of Narsi in Hingoli, Maharashtra, during the Medieval period of India. He is celebrated within the Varkari tradition of Hinduism, primarily as a devoted follower of the deity Vithoba of Pandharpur. His life, however, remains shrouded in mystery, with many of the narratives surrounding him being composed long after his passing, leading to a plethora of miracle-filled hagiographies that often contradict one another.

Influenced deeply by Vaishnavism, Namdev gained widespread recognition across India for his devotional songs, known as Bhajan-Kirtans, which were set to music. His philosophical outlook on Brahman incorporates elements of both nirguna and saguna brahman, reflecting themes found in Vedanta. This unique blend of devotion and philosophy has left a lasting impact on the spiritual landscape of India.

In contemporary times, Namdev's legacy continues to thrive within the Varkari tradition, where he is honored alongside other prominent gurus. His influence is evident during the biannual pilgrimages to Pandharpur, where masses of devotees walk together in reverence. Additionally, his hymns have transcended regional boundaries, finding a place in the North Indian traditions of the Dadu Panthis, Kabir Panthis, and Sikhs, with some of his compositions even included in the Guru Granth Sahib.
