Nancy Langat, born on August 22, 1981, is a distinguished Kenyan middle-distance runner renowned for her expertise in the 1,500 metres. Her remarkable career reached a pinnacle when she clinched the gold medal in the 1,500 m at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, achieving a personal best time of four minutes and zero point twenty-three seconds. This victory marked her as only the second Kenyan woman to win an Olympic gold, following Pamela Jelimo's triumph in the 800 m at the same games.
Before her Olympic success, Langat showcased her talent at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2005 World Championships, although she did not advance to the finals in those events. In her early athletic career, she primarily focused on the 800 metres, where she enjoyed considerable success as a junior athlete. Her transition to the 1,500 m proved fruitful, as evidenced by her performance at the 2009 World Championships, where she did not progress past the semifinals but concluded the season with a victory at the World Athletics Final.
In 2010, Langat dominated the Diamond League circuit in the 1,500 m, remaining undefeated against the world's top competitors. However, her performance at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup was marred by controversy when she fell while attempting to impede Hind Dehiba during a fierce competition. Despite this setback, she achieved a remarkable double victory in the 800/1500 m events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and was honored as the Kenyan Sportswoman of the Year in December.
The following year, Langat faced challenges on the Diamond League circuit, finishing fifth in both the Golden Gala and Prefontaine Classic. Nevertheless, she secured the top position in the 1500 m at the 2011 Military World Games. Unfortunately, her journey was hindered by a knee injury in 2012, preventing her from defending her Olympic title.
