Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, known mononymously as Nas, was born on September 14, 1973. An influential figure in East Coast hip-hop, he has earned a reputation as one of the greatest rappers of all time. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas began his musical journey in 1989, initially performing under the name 'Nasty Nas' and recording demos with the guidance of fellow rapper Large Professor. His debut came in 1991 with the song 'Live at the Barbeque' by Main Source.
In 1992, Nas signed with Columbia Records and released his groundbreaking debut album, 'Illmatic', on April 19, 1994. This album, now an inductee of the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry, is celebrated as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. His follow-up, 'It Was Written', released in 1996, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and solidified his place in mainstream music with hits like 'If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)' featuring Lauryn Hill.
Despite facing criticism for his third and fourth albums, 'I Am' and 'Nastradamus', Nas rebounded from 2001 to 2005 during a highly publicized feud with Jay-Z, which included the iconic diss track 'Ether'. His subsequent albums, 'Stillmatic', 'God's Son', and 'Street's Disciple', helped restore his critical acclaim. In 2006, he signed with Def Jam Recordings and shifted towards a more provocative and politically charged style with albums like 'Hip Hop Is Dead' and his untitled ninth studio album.
Nas's collaborative work with Damian Marley on 'Distant Relatives' in 2010 showcased his philanthropic side, donating album royalties to African charities. His tenth studio album, 'Life Is Good', received a Grammy nomination, and in 2020, 'King's Disease' won him his first Grammy for Best Rap Album. His subsequent releases, including 'King's Disease II' and 'Magic', have continued to receive critical acclaim, with his long-awaited collaboration with DJ Premier set for release in 2025.
Beyond music, Nas has made significant contributions as an entrepreneur, serving as associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine and co-founding Mass Appeal Records. With seventeen studio albums to his name, ten of which are certified gold or platinum in the U.S., Nas remains a pivotal figure in the music industry.
