Natar Ungalaaq

Natar Ungalaaq, born in 1959, is a distinguished Canadian Inuk actor, filmmaker, and sculptor whose artistic contributions are celebrated in numerous major collections of Inuit art. His journey in the film industry began with significant roles in Canadian and American cinema, including the acclaimed films Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner in 2001 and The Necessities of Life in 2008. Ungalaaq's talent extends beyond acting; he is also a producer and director at the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation.

From a young age, Natar was immersed in the world of art, beginning his carving journey at the tender age of nine or ten with his grandfather's tools. His remarkable work in white soapstone, particularly the piece titled 'Sedna with a Hairbrush' created in 1985, is proudly displayed in the National Gallery of Canada, showcasing his skill and dedication to Inuit artistry.

In collaboration with director Zacharias Kunuk, Ungalaaq played a pivotal role in establishing a production company in an Inuit community that lacked television access. Their entrepreneurial spirit led them to raise funds through the sale of their handmade carvings, which enabled them to purchase their first camera gear in 1981. This partnership not only fostered their creative endeavors but also contributed to the representation of Inuit culture in film.

In 2016, Natar made his directorial debut by co-directing the film Searchers alongside Kunuk, further solidifying his multifaceted career in the arts. His contributions to film and sculpture continue to inspire and resonate within the Inuit community and beyond.
