His remarkable achievements include winning a bronze medal at the two thousand four Summer Olympics in Athens, where he finished behind Ivano Brugnetti and Francisco Fernandez, both of whom faced doping controversies. Deakes' prowess was further demonstrated at the Commonwealth Games, where he earned gold medals in both the twenty-kilometer and fifty-kilometer walk events at the two thousand two Manchester Games and the two thousand six Melbourne Games, making history as the first man to achieve this feat consecutively. He also claimed bronze medals at the nineteen ninety-eight Kuala Lumpur Games and the nineteen ninety-six World Junior Championships.
In two thousand seven, Deakes triumphed at the World Championships in Osaka, winning gold in the fifty-kilometer walk under challenging conditions. He also set a new world record for the fifty-kilometer walk on December second, two thousand six, with a time of three hours, thirty-five minutes, and forty-seven seconds.
After announcing his withdrawal from the two thousand eight Summer Olympics due to a hamstring injury, Deakes made his final competitive appearance at the two thousand twelve London Olympics, finishing nineteenth in the fifty-kilometer walk. He officially retired from the sport in February two thousand thirteen and subsequently became a Board Member for Athletics Australia. In two thousand eighteen, he joined the Athletics Integrity Unit Anti-Doping Panel. Deakes holds a double degree in Banking and Finance and Law (Honours) from the University of Canberra, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University, and a Masters in Law with a specialization in Sports Law from the University of Melbourne.
